Coal is the largest source of energy for the generation of electricity worldwide, as well as one of the largest worldwide anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide releases.


What is Coal Ore

Is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock usually occurring in rock strata in layers or veins called coal beds or coal seams. The harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rock because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. Coal is composed primarily of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements, chiefly hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. Coal lumps are items harvested from coal ore blocks. They are the third most efficient fuel available for furnaces (after lava buckets and blaze rods), being able to smelt eight units per lump of coal. Coal lumps and charcoal are also the only fuels accepted by powered mine carts (providing approximately four minutes of transit each other.

Charcoal is an alternative to coal. Smelting wood in a furnace creates charcoal, which can be used for most of the same things coal can, except for crafting the upcoming blocks of coal. Charcoal makes it easier for players to survive their first night as it allows them to craft torches much more easily. Charcoal does not stack with coal, though the two look identical and cannot be differentiated with a texture pack.

Coal Ore mining

Coal is mined using giant machines to remove the coal from the ground. There are two basic methods to remove coal: surface mining and underground mining. Surface mining is used when the coal is typically less than 200 feet below the surface. Giant machines are used to remove top layers of soil and to expose the coal. The coal is excavated and after the mining is complete, the soil and rock are returned to fill the mines. The area is then revegerated and can be used for other purposes such as cropland, wildlife habitat, and recreation, commercial or industrial use. The method is used frequently in area where the coal resource base is near the surface and it is less expensive. Coal ore can be found at any elevation, wherever there is stone. The Uses Of Coal Ore:

Coal gasification can be used to produce syngas, a mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2) gas. This syngas can then be converted into transportation fuels, such as gasoline and diesel, through the Fischer-Tropsch process. This technology is currently used by the Sasol chemical company of South Africa to make motor vehicle fuels from coal and natural gas. Alternatively, the hydrogen obtained from gasification can be used for various purposes, such as powering a hydrogen economy, making ammonia, or upgrading fossil fuels.

During gasification, the coal is mixed with oxygen and steam while also being heated and pressurized. During the reaction, oxygen and water molecules oxidize the coal into carbon monoxide (CO), while also releasing hydrogen gas (H2).
